Ambassador Mkrtchyan’s Meeting with Greece’s Minister of Education Sofia Zacharaki

03 April, 2025

On April 3, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan, met with the newly appointed Minister of Education, Religious Affairs, and Sports of Greece, Sofia Zacharaki.

Ambassador Mkrtchyan congratulated Minister Zacharaki on her appointment and wished her success in her tenure.

The two discussed opportunities to expand cooperation in the field of education. They addressed existing Armenian language and Armenian studies programs already launched at universities in Greece, particularly in Athens and Komotini, as well as initiatives aimed at promoting the Greek language in Armenia—especially at Yerevan State University and the Brusov State University.

Ambassador Mkrtchyan proposed the idea of exploring options for offering classical Greek language instruction for students in Armenia.

They discussed the implementation of educational and cultural programs in both Armenia and Greece. Minister Zacharaki noted that Greece has considerable experience in combining these areas, including through educational and cultural foundations such as the Stavros Niarchos and Onassis Foundations.

Ambassador Mkrtchyan presented several initiatives already registered by Armenia’s Ministry of Education, Science, Culture and Sport in this regard and suggested that the Greek experience be considered during upcoming high-level visits. He also introduced the Armenian government’s concept of the "Academic City" project.

The two sides also discussed the possibility of organizing high-level reciprocal visits in the near future, as well as prospects for expanding the legal framework for cooperation in the fields of education and science.
