110th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide Commemorated in Kalamata

24 April, 2025

On the occasion of the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, a commemorative event was organized at the monument dedicated to the victims of the genocide, initiated by the Municipality of Kalamata.

The event was attended by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan; His Grace Bishop Sahak Yemishian, Primate of the Armenian Diocese of Greece; Bishop of Kalamata, Chryssostomos Savvatos; Member of the Hellenic Parliament, Miltos Chrysomallis; Deputy Mayor of Kalamata, Sarantos Marinerakis; Deputy Governor of Messinia, Stathis Anastasopoulos; representative of the Armenian National Committee of Greece, Sergo Kaplanian; President of the Armenian community of Kalamata, Sofia Margaryan; as well as several other deputy mayors from the region, representatives of the armed forces, and media.

Before the official speeches, Bishop Sahak Mashalian conducted a requiem service in memory of the genocide victims.

In his remarks, Ambassador Tigran Mkrtchyan emphasized the importance of three main pillars in the prevention of genocides: the fight against denial, the necessity of genocide education—not only in universities but also in secondary schools—and the meaning and significance of remembrance days. He noted that in the context of the Armenian Genocide, these three pillars are effectively implemented in Greece. He expressed gratitude to the government and people of Greece for warmly welcoming Armenia and the Armenian people, and for their continued support.

The Ambassador also paid tribute to the Greek cleric, Metropolitan of Trebizond, Chryssanthos Philippidis, who defended Armenians during 1915–1916 and made efforts to establish an Armenian-Greek alliance.

Concluding his speech, Ambassador Mkrtchyan expressed his sincere thanks to the city authorities of Kalamata for organizing the event.

At the end of the event, a wreath-laying ceremony was held at the memorial.
