Central Commemoration of the 110th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide and Tribute at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Athens

28 April, 2025

As part of the commemorative events marking the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, a central political event took place at the “Acropol” Theater in Athens, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The events were organized by the Attica Region and the Armenian National Committee of Greece.

Speakers at the event included Hovhannes Ghazaryan, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Loverdos on behalf of the Greek Government, and Member of the Hellenic Parliament Athanasios Plevris. A welcome address was also delivered by Attica Deputy Governor Christina Kefalogianni.

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan, delivered remarks at the event. In his speech, the ambassador expressed gratitude for the statements of solidarity issued by Greek leadership and all political forces on April 24.

“Since April 24, the 110th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide—planned and carried out by the Young Turk leadership of the Ottoman Empire—has been commemorated in Armenia, in many cities across Greece, and around the world through political, community, and cultural events. Political leaders have made public statements honoring the memory of the victims. I cannot fail to mention the statements by the President of the Hellenic Republic Konstantinos Tassoulas, Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, Parliament Speaker Nikitas Kaklamanis, and nearly all political forces in the Hellenic Parliament. As the Greek Prime Minister rightly noted, this is further evidence of the ‘eternal unity of the Greek and Armenian peoples for Truth, Dignity, and Justice,’” Ambassador Mkrtchyan stated.

In the context of genocide prevention, the ambassador emphasized the importance of rejecting denialism, incorporating genocide education, and globally commemorating genocide remembrance days—all of which, he noted, are implemented in Greece.

Summarizing his message, Ambassador Mkrtchyan highlighted:

“The most essential factor in preventing genocide is, ultimately, building a resilient society with reliable friends. For Armenia, Greece is one such friend. History has shown that the Armenian people, like their blood brothers the Greeks, time and again find the path to revival. Our memory is not a weapon, but a source of awakening. It is through this memory and unity that we can protect historical truth and dignity.”

The artistic segment of the event featured a performance by Armenian opera singer Silva Petrosyan, accompanied by Kristine Tokatlian.

At the conclusion of the event, Christos Vassilopoulos, host of the Greek TV program “Machine of Time” (Μηχανή του Χρόνου), screened excerpts from a new documentary based on the testimonies of Armenian Genocide survivors. The full documentary will be aired on May 5 on the COSMOTE History channel.

The event concluded with musical performances by the student choirs of the Armenian Blue Cross “Jenazian” Secondary School and the “Levon and Sofia Hagopian” School.

Following the program, participants proceeded to Syntagma Square, where wreaths were laid at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide of 1915.
