Ambassador Tigran Mkrtchyan Meets with Mayor of Heraklion Alexis Kalokairinos

05 September, 2025

During his working visit to Crete, the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan, met with the Mayor of Heraklion, Alexis Kalokairinos.

During the meeting, the existence and active role of the Armenian community in Heraklion since Byzantine times was discussed, as well as the traditional friendly relations between the Armenian and Greek peoples. It was noted that the Armenian community, while preserving its distinct identity, continues to play an active role not only in the socio-economic life of the city of Heraklion but also throughout Greece.

At the mayor’s request, Ambassador Mkrtchyan presented an overview of regional developments and the recent agreements reached between Armenia and Azerbaijan in Washington, emphasizing their importance for the comprehensive normalization of relations between the two countries. He highlighted that the process is based on the mutual recognition of each other's sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the inviolability of internationally recognized borders, in line with the 1991 Alma-Ata Declaration.

The Mayor of Heraklion noted that he closely follows developments in Armenia and the region, underlining that it is of great importance for Armenia to establish good relations and peaceful coexistence with neighboring countries.

The sides also discussed potential avenues for cooperation between the Municipality of Heraklion and cities in Armenia.
