Armenia–Greece Regional and Cultural Cooperation Discussed in Thessaloniki

30 April, 2026

Within the framework of his working visit to Thessaloniki, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan, met with the Governor of the Region of Central Macedonia, Athena Aidona Athanasiadou, and the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis.

During the meetings, Ambassador Mkrtchyan discussed with his interlocutors the prospects for interregional and decentralized cooperation with Armenia.

In particular, discussions with Governor Athanasiadou focused on opportunities for establishing cooperation in three main areas: innovative technologies, tourism, and culture. In this context, the sides emphasized the bilateral potential for participating jointly in various EU programs through common applications.

During the meeting with Mayor Angeloudis, the parties discussed the events organized and planned throughout the year through the joint efforts of the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Greece and the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Armenia in Thessaloniki, including events dedicated to the 35th anniversary of Armenia’s independence. They also discussed the possibility of celebrating bilateral city days.

The importance of introducing a new methodology for highlighting the rich Armenian heritage in Thessaloniki was emphasized, taking into account the significant increase in tourism during the summer season to Greece’s second-largest city and its surrounding regions, including from Armenia.

The Ambassador also presented to his interlocutors the recent regional developments, Armenia’s process of unblocking regional communications and normalizing relations with neighboring countries, as well as the latest achievements in Armenia–Greece bilateral relations.

Ambassador Mkrtchyan thanked the Mayor for hosting, in February 2026 at the City Hall, the unique exhibition titled “Greek and Armenian Mythology Through the Eyes of Children,” organized within the framework of the international competition-festival “Universe Art,” featuring around 100 paintings by children aged 5–18 from Armenian art schools.

Honorary Consul of the Republic of Armenia in Thessaloniki, Akis Dagazian, also participated in the meetings.
