Ambassador Tigran Mkrtchyan Delivers a Public Lecture at the Armenian State Pedagogical University

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Greece Tigran Mkrtchyan visited the Armenian State Pedagogical University (ASPU).

During his meeting with Lilit Mkrtchyan, Acting Rector of ASPU, the parties discussed prospects for expanding Armenian-Greek cooperation in the fields of education, science, and culture, developing partnerships between universities, implementing joint programs, and deepening academic cooperation.

The Ambassador then delivered a public lecture for the university’s faculty members and students.

Tigran Mkrtchyan addressed the historical foundations of Armenian-Greek relations, the civilizational similarities between the two peoples, Armenia’s historical role, and the strategic partnership established between the two countries.

“For nearly three decades, the cooperation established between Armenia and Greece, particularly in recent years, has acquired strategic importance in the field of defense. It is not limited to defense cooperation alone, but also encompasses military education and training, which play a significant role in developing the capabilities of the armed forces,” the Ambassador noted.

He also presented the priorities of the Embassy’s activities, emphasizing that education and culture occupy a special place on the agenda of Armenian-Greek cooperation.

The Ambassador highlighted the importance of cultural diplomacy, viewing it as an essential prerequisite for strengthening mutual understanding, trust, and cooperation between peoples. He also spoke about initiatives being implemented in the field of education, the activities of Armenian studies centers, the expansion of academic ties, and the importance of the historian’s profession, emphasizing that a profound understanding of history is one of the important foundations for the professional development of every diplomat.

Students and faculty members had the opportunity to ask the Ambassador questions of interest to them.

Speaking about the diplomatic profession, Tigran Mkrtchyan noted that modern technological developments have transformed the tools of the profession but have not replaced the mission of a diplomat:

“It is often argued today that the diplomatic profession is no longer relevant in the information age. This is a misconception. Technology changes the ways and tools of our work, but it cannot replace the human element. Diplomacy is first and foremost about human interaction, the ability to understand a country’s history, culture, and way of thinking, the art of preventing conflicts, building cooperation, and creating trust. Armenia needs a highly professional diplomatic service, and the diplomatic profession requires knowledge, consistency, patience, and responsibility,” he emphasized.

Tigran Mkrtchyan also presented his professional career and spoke about the particularities of diplomatic service, sharing interesting details from his mission in Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia from 2016 to 2021.

The Ambassador advised young people to study history thoroughly, master foreign languages, and never stop learning. According to him, the educational process never ends, while self-education is one of the most important prerequisites for both professional and personal development:

“Self-education is one of the most important values, and everyone should, first and foremost, be their own strictest critic. We can have a strong state and a mature society only when each person, in their everyday life, is guided by the principles of continuous learning, development, and responsibility. Everything begins at school, but education accompanies a person throughout their entire life,” the Ambassador noted.

Acting Rector of ASPU Lilit Mkrtchyan highlighted the importance of the meeting, noting that it provided students with an opportunity to gain a better understanding of the specifics of diplomatic service, become familiar with Armenia’s foreign policy priorities, and learn more about current developments in international relations.
