Speech by the Ambassador Mr. Tigran Mkrtchyan during the event dedicated to the 100th anniversary since the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the establishment of the Armenian community in Greece

04 April, 2022

Speech by the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia to the Hellenic Republic Mr. Tigran Mkrtchyan during the first of a series of events dedicated to the 100th anniversary since the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the establishment of the Armenian community in Greece.

Dear friends,

Thank you for honoring us tonight with your presence.

With tonight's lecture, the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Greece launches a series of events dedicated to the hundredth anniversary of the Asia Minor Catastrophe and the creation of the Armenian community in Greece.

The Armenian people have a particular sensitivity to the events of 1922 because they too lost many of their small homelands due to the Asia Minor Catastrophe and had thousands of their own victims. So, this can be considered as a shared pain in our history, shared tragedy of Greeks and Armenians. And this lecture will further shed light on the common life of our brotherly nations in Smyrna.

The Armenian people are grateful to the Greek people for receiving thousands of Armenian refugees in their arms.

In our events, we will have the cooperation of organizations of our community in Greece and institutions of Armenia, such as the Institute of the Museum of Genocide in Yerevan.

I warmly thank the elected assistant professor of the Department of Turkish Studies of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Mr. Herve Zorzelen for agreeing to be the first guest of our events’ cycle..

I thank our hosts, the president of the Athens Daily Newspaper Editors Association, Mrs. Maria Antoniadou, and the ESIEA Educational Foundation.

Thank you all, and I invite you, after the end of the lecture, to taste some drinks and delicacies from Armenia.
