The 34th Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia Celebrated in Athens

07 October, 2025

On the occasion of the 34th anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Armenia, the Embassy of Armenia in the Hellenic Republic organized a concert-reception at the historic Municipal Theatre of Piraeus.

The cultural program featured performances by the talented Armenian musicians Narek Kazazyan (qanun) and Anahit Dilbaryan (piano), who were invited specially from Armenia.

The event was attended by Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff Dimitrios Choupis, senior officers from the Hellenic Army and Ministry of National Defence, members of the Hellenic Parliament, representatives of the Presidency, government, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and regional and municipal authorities, over 30 ambassadors accredited to Greece, numerous diplomats and military attachés, leaders of the Armenian Apostolic and Catholic Churches in Greece, clergy, journalists, and representatives of the Armenian community from Athens and various regions of Greece, including Thessaloniki, Crete, Patras, and Kalamata.

Ambassador Tigran Mkrtchyan delivered the opening speech, during which he reviewed Armenia's foreign policy achievements over the past year and addressed Armenia–EU and Armenia–Greece relations, also emphasizing the vital role of the Greek-Armenian community in bilateral ties.

He stated in particular:

“Today we celebrate the 34th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia. On previous occasions marking our independence, I have rarely been able to say this, but this year, despite growing instability in different parts of the world, there is a genuine sense of hope in our region – hope that developments may move in the direction of peace and cooperation.

This hope is grounded in the declaration made this August in Washington with the mediation of the President of the United States, by the Prime Minister of Armenia and the President of Azerbaijan, as well as in the initialing of the peace treaty by the foreign ministers of the two countries.

According to that declaration, the Republic of Armenia will work with the United States and other mutually agreed third parties to define the scope of the "Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity" project to be implemented on the territory of Armenia. This initiative envisions the construction of railways, highways, pipelines, and power lines crossing Armenia and connecting East to West — and as a result, North to South. It is fully aligned with Armenia's proposed "Crossroads of Peace" vision.

Of course, the signing of a final, unconditional peace treaty would mark a stronger and clearer milestone toward lasting peace in the region.”

Speaking on Armenia–Greece relations, Ambassador Mkrtchyan noted:

“Throughout the year, political dialogue between the governments and foreign ministries of Armenia and Greece has remained active and dynamic. As always, cooperation in the defense sector has been a key priority, including the working visit of the Armenian Minister of Defence and, later, the official visit of the Chief of the General Staff of Armenia to Greece.

Significant progress was made in the fields of education, science, and culture, especially with the official visit of Armenia’s Minister of Education, Science, Culture and Sports to Greece this summer, during which five key documents were signed — an unprecedented development in the history of our cooperation in these fields.

Intensified dialogue has also taken place in the fields of tourism and high technology. I hope that all these efforts will soon culminate in establishing a strategic partnership between Armenia and Greece.”

The cultural part of the event included performances of works by both Armenian and Greek contemporary composers by Narek Kazazyan and Anahit Dilbaryan.

The celebration concluded with an official reception in the theatre foyer, where guests enjoyed traditional Armenian cuisine and beverages, including specially selected wines provided by Karas Wines for the occasion.
