“Greek and Armenian Mythology Through the Eyes of Children” Exhibition Opens in Thessaloniki

12 February, 2026

At the initiative of the Municipality of Thessaloniki and the Embassy of the Republic of Armenia in Greece, with the support of the Honorary Consulate of the Republic of Armenia in Thessaloniki, a unique exhibition of students from Armenian art schools entitled “Greek and Armenian Mythology Through the Eyes of Children” was opened in the main hall of the Thessaloniki City Hall.

The exhibition was organized within the framework of the “Universe Art” International Competition-Festival and features around 100 artworks created by children aged 5–18.

Opening remarks were delivered by the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan, and the Deputy Mayor of Thessaloniki, Spiros Tzelepis.

Ambassador Mkrtchyan presented the background of the exhibition, highlighting the role of the “Universe Art” International Competition-Festival in providing talented children with opportunities for self-expression. He emphasized the importance of this unique exhibition of Armenian art school students, aimed at enhancing mutual awareness and strengthening ties between the Armenian and Greek peoples.

He also noted that the Embassy actively promotes cultural diplomacy initiatives in Thessaloniki and other cities across Greece, making Armenia more visible to the friendly Greek people.

Spiros Tzelepis, Deputy Mayor of Thessaloniki for Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Youth, welcomed the initiative of the Armenian Embassy in Greece on behalf of the Mayor of Thessaloniki, Stelios Angeloudis, and highly praised the works of the students of Armenian art schools. He noted that the mythologies of both Armenia and Greece occupy a special place in cultural traditions and continue to maintain the relevance of their messages while offering aesthetic value. According to him, myths have never been absent from any historical period; they have endured for millennia, underscoring their significance.

Deputy Mayor Tzelepis also added that despite the centuries-old friendship between the two peoples, Armenian mythology remains largely unfamiliar to Greeks, and such initiatives contribute to raising awareness and appreciation of Armenian traditions and culture.

The exhibition was attended by representatives of local self-government bodies of Thessaloniki, the Coordinator of the Prime Minister’s Office in Thessaloniki, members of the Hellenic Parliament, representatives of the military, political, and religious leadership of the Macedonia and Thrace region, Consuls General accredited in Thessaloniki, honorary consuls, intellectuals, and journalists.

A reception followed the official opening ceremony.

The exhibition will remain open in Thessaloniki until the end of February.
