Ambassador Tigran Mkrtchyan Visits the National Library of Greece to Discuss Bilateral Cooperation

Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Republic of Armenia to Greece, Tigran Mkrtchyan, visited the National Library of Greece (NLG), where he was received by its Director General, Dr. Chryssa Nikolaou.

During the meeting, the participants discussed opportunities for further developing cooperation between the National Library of Greece and the National Library of Armenia, particularly in the areas of professional exchange, the preservation and promotion of cultural heritage, and the implementation of joint initiatives.

Special attention was given to the possibility of signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the two national libraries, which could serve as a basis for strengthening institutional ties and implementing joint programmes and initiatives. The meeting took place ahead of the Director General of the National Library of Greece’s forthcoming visit to Armenia in October.

As part of the visit, Ambassador Mkrtchyan was presented with two valuable and rare Armenian manuscripts held in the Special Collections of the National Library of Greece: a 14th-century Armenian prayer book and a 15th-century manuscript written in erkatagir script (a Bible). The presentation of these manuscripts once again underscored the importance of historical and cultural ties, as well as the significance of preserving and appreciating cultural heritage.

On behalf of the Embassy of Armenia, Ambassador Tigran Mkrtchyan donated books on Armenian history and culture to the National Library of Greece. He also presented the Greek institution with books provided by the National Library of Armenia.

The meeting reaffirmed the mutual interest of the two national libraries, the Embassy of Armenia, and the National Library of Greece in further deepening cooperation and promoting joint initiatives in the fields of culture, knowledge, and cultural heritage preservation.
